Techsters roll past Southern with ease
Staff and wire reports
Oregon Tech&
s bus arrived an hour late Saturday night but it arrived early enough for the Owls to paste the Southern Oregon women&
s basketball team with a 72-54 Cascade Conference setback at McNeal Pavilion.
OIT (13-5, 4-3 Cascade) scored the first five points of the contest and never trailed in toppling the Raiders (9-9, 2-5) for the sixth consecutive encounter.
Seniors Samantha Gilbert and Laura Ivancie each scored 15 to lead the Owls, who extended a 34-18 halftime edge to a 22-point bulge to 53-31 with 11 minutes remaining.
SOU, which scored only 10 points over the first 14 minutes and registered baskets on back-to-back possessions only once in the opening stanza, received a game-high 19 points from junior guard Jenna Ayers.
Oregon Tech shot only 34 percent (22 of 64) but compensated by going 20-for-27 from the free-throw line, out-rebounding SOU 50-41 and limiting the home squad to a 21-for-63 clip (33 percent).
Four Raiders fouled out in the team&
s third straight home loss.

SOU Wrestling
At Portland, a long layoff didn&
t deter the Southern Oregon University wrestling team.
The Raiders took out Simon Fraser 29-6, then narrowly upset Nebraska-Kearney before falling, 25-19.
Seventh-ranked SOU had been off for three weeks heading into Saturday&
s double dual meet at the Portland State University campus.
&
It was an interesting day,&
said SOU coach Mike Ritchey. &
We haven&
t wrestled in three weeks, so we were a little bit flat.
&
We wrestled competitively, just not good enough to win against Nebraska Kearney.&
Against Nebraska-Kearney, ranked fourth in Division II, the Raiders got a pin from Jimmy Ulrey at 149 pounds. Teammate Jimmy Grochowsky scored a 7-3 decision at 165 and David O&
Brien won by major decision, 12-4, at 174.
SOU took every weight division in the matchup against Simon Fraser except 197 and 285 pounds.
