Young standouts boost Henley over Phoenix

KLAMATH FALLS ' The Henley High boys basketball team is one of the youngest in the Skyline Conference.

It's also one of the best.

Sophomores Wintson Mueller and Mike D'Olivo combined for 31 points and 12 rebounds, and junior point guard Colin Stock had 13 points and six assists as the Hornets flew to a 69-53 win over Phoenix Tuesday.

The victory moved Henley to 8-8 overall and 3-1 in the Skyline, one game in back of top-ranked Hidden Valley.

Our kids are coming into their own, second-year Henley coach Jack Lee said. We're young, but we played a tough preseason and now we're getting the hang of how to win in this league.

Mueller, a 6-foot-3&

189; post, had 19 points to lead all scorers. He also snagged six boards. D'Olivo, a 5-10 wing, added 12 points and six rebounds.

The Pirates rallied in the third quarter, cutting a 32-24 halftime deficit to five points, but standout forward Marty Joseph picked up his fourth personal foul and then a controversial technical foul, which disqualified him from the game.

HIDDEN VALLEY 63, ROGUE RIVER 47 ' At Rogue River, Jordan Hayter scored 18 points to lead Hidden Valley.

The Mustangs also got a hand from Cody Crowe, who scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Jimmy Sager also got 10 rebounds for Hidden Valley to go with his six points.

Ryan Castro led for Rogue River with 10 points.

NORTH VALLEY 44, ILLINOIS VALLEY 41 ' At Merlin, North Valley's Derek Vandehey made two free throws in the final 17 seconds and Nate Ellis blocked an Illinois Valley 3-point attempt at the buzzer to seal the victory.

The Knights led 30-21 at halftime but went on two scoring droughts in the second half.

While North Valley forced 32 turnovers in the game, it gave up 15 of its 22 turnovers in the second half.

Josh Makepeace had 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and three blocks in the win. Ellis added 10 points and four steals for the Knights (11-6, 2-2 Skyline).

Kalen Snook scored 12 for Illinois Valley (4-11, 0-4 Skyline).

Skyline A Boys

BUTTE FALLS 52, PROSPECT 50 ' At Butte Falls, Dillon Ross and Chris Stephenson combined for nine points in the last minute to help Butte Falls take over first place in the Skyline A League.

Ross, a senior post, went 5 of 6 on free throws in the late going and finished with 22 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Stephenson added 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Loggers (8-9, 4-1 Sky A).

Darryl Swearingen had 14 points for Prospect, and Ricky Miller added 13.

HIDDEN VALLEY 57, ROGUE RIVER 23 ' At Murphy, top-ranked Hidden Valley held Rogue River to 13 points after the first quarter in the Skyline victory.

The Mustangs outrebounded Rogue River 42-23, led by Megan Swanson's 10. Swanson added six points and three steals.

Karlie Matson led Hidden Valley (12-5, 3-1 Skyline) with 12 points, and Jamie Richardson pitched in 11 points and four steals.

Angie Caschera had team highs of 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Chieftains (4-11, 0-5 Skyline).

ILLINOIS VALLEY 58, NORTH VALLEY 34 ' At Cave Junction, Sheena Cole had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead fifth-ranked Illinois Valley to the Skyline Conference win.

Sarah Houston added 14 points and 11 boards for the Cougars (4-0 Skyline), while Emily Dudley scored 14 to go with five steals.

Emily Morehouse had 10 points to pace North Valley (0-4 Skyline).

HENLEY 48, PHOENIX 29 ' At Phoenix, Henley outrebounded Phoenix 52-28 and had 28 offensive rebounds alone to out-muscle Phoenix in the Skyline contest.

Hornets post Megan Christensen scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Jenne Matchett added 10 points and 11 rebounds and Mikayla Morgan had 12 rebounds to go with her nine points.

Alex Hanscom led the Pirates (2-15, 1-4 Skyline) with nine points and Laci Lockett grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

BUTTE FALLS 65, PROSPECT 32 ' At Butte Falls, Brianna Wright had 15 points to lead three players in double figures as Butte Falls cruised to a Skyline A League win.

Elysia Rodgers added 14 points, five assists and four steals for the Loggers (8-8, 4-1 Sky A), Nikki Harms had 14 points and four steals and Ceci Myers dished out seven assists.

Lacy Musard led Prospect (3-12, 1-4) with 12 points.
