Last-second shot lifts KU over Ashland

KLAMATH FALLS ' It wasn't pretty at times, but the ending to Thursday's boys basketball game against Ashland couldn't have been better for Klamath Union head coach Bret Crawford.

Junior post Jeremy Yazzie scored on a rebound with 3.7 seconds to play and the Pelicans thwarted a last-second attempt by the Grizzlies to eke out a 53-52 Southern Oregon Conference victory.

It was too darn close, but I have a feeling that's pretty much how it's going to be (in the SOC), said Crawford. Other than South, this league is going to be crazy.

KU (9-6, 2-2 SOC) had trailed for much of the contest until a solid five-minute stretch in the third quarter allowed the Pelicans to take a 46-44 lead into the fourth.

Both teams struggled to find the mark in the final quarter, and that held true to the end as KU drew up a play during a timeout with 18 seconds to go but found the Grizzlies had a defensive answer. The Pels regrouped in time to get a driving shot up by Alex Foster, with Yazzie in position for the put-back.

Ashland (8-7, 2-2) then attempted a long pass to Josh Cornelius, but he was quickly trapped and lost the ball amid the chaos to close out the contest.

Sam Littleton had 13 points and Colin Costantino 11 to pace Ashland, while Daniel Landrum had 12 for KU.
