Grizzlies blank Mazama in baseball opener

ASHLAND ' Gus Gaviglio was already in mid-season form Tuesday when the Ashland baseball team opened its season against Mazama.

The junior pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Grizzlies to a 2-0 victory over Mazama at Mountain Avenue Park.

Gaviglio gave up two hits, both infield singles, and struck out seven. He got offensive support from Tyson Senestraro and Justin Meza, who both finished with two hits apiece.

Ashland tacked on two runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.

Wes Dodds started the rally with a one-out single. He stole second and came home on Senestraro's RBI double. Meza capped the inning with another double to put Ashland in front 2-0.

Junior Larry Wagner took the loss for Mazama.

— Ashland next plays Henley on Thursday.

EAGLE POINT 4, SOUTH UMPQUA — ' At Eagle Point, Derek Grieve had two hits and picked up the pitching win in the season opener for Eagle Point.

Grieve gave up one run in four innings and had two RBIs, including a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Nick Staller had an RBI and scored a run for the Eagles.

North Medford swept all four doubles matches.

North's Steve Folsom registered an 8-4 victory over Austin Grant in the No. — singles spot.

St. Mary's, whose program is in its first year, picked up a lone win from Sam Moore in No. 2 singles.

CRUSADER RELAYS ' Mike Delgado, Ryan Greene and Max Miller registered three victories each in leading the St. Mary's boys to first place at the Crusader Relays.

St. Mary's edged Oakland in the team competition.

Delgado, Greene and Miller ran legs on the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays. Robbie Leonis joined the threesome on the first two events while Mike Seus completed the 4x400 quartet.

Seus also took the 3,000 in 9:33.3 while Leonis won the discus with a lifetime best throw of 130-8&

In the girls meet, Kayla Eichamer, Mia Rawson and Nikki Steinsiek ran legs on the Crusaders' triumphant 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams. The latter squad, which also featured Rebecca Tribelhorn, clocked an impressive early-season time of 4:22.2.

St. Mary's sprint relay team of Jo Reeder, Anna McCreedy, Hanna Heyke and Isabel Keller won in a time of 2:14. The distance medley squad of Eichamer, Tribelhorn, Emily Volk and Lindsay Gasik also prevailed, clocking 14:11.

In the girls 3,000, the Crusaders got a sweep. Gasik clocked 11:59, Brittany Martin 13:28 and Karen Flynn 13:30.

Keller won the high jump at 4-8.

Oakland won the girls team title, followed by St. Mary's.


ST. MARY'S WINS ' At Eagle Point, Nelson Keating shot a 79 to lead St. Mary's to a win at the four-team event at the Eagle Point Golf Course.

The Crusaders finished with a 355 to nudge past Cascade Christian (365). Jefferson Horn led the Challengers with an 83.

Umpqua Valley Christian's Justin Smithnisler led all competitors with a 73.
