Ashland softball scores second straight victory

Sara Sibowlitz socked a bases-clearing double with two outs in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie and send the Ashland softball team to its second victory against one loss. The Grizzlies recorded a 5-3 win.

Freshman Bella Pribyl struck out nine and walked two in a route-going performance for the Grizzlies.

Bailey Hasty had two hits for Ashland in the nonconference game.

Boys Baseball

At Talent, Phoenix had just four hits and committed four errors but took advantage of six walks and two hit batsmen by Cascade Christian in the Pirates&

season opener. Phoenix won 4-3.

Phoenix scored five runs in the third inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit.

Junior Dustin Smith belted a two-run home run to right-center field in the fourth to extend Phoenix&

s lead.

Aaron Decker picked up the pitching win in relief of sophomore starter Jordan Lewis.

Cascade Christian (3-1), which was playing its fourth game in as many days, was led by Matt Hauser&

s 2-for-3 effort.

Boys Golf

At Eagle Point, Austin Harfts carded a 76 and Ben Wright followed with a 77 to help Ashland seize third-place in the Modoc Invitational at Eagle Point Golf Course.

Mackenzie Gordon shot 79 and Graham Aviles and Darwin Burchanek each took 81s for Roseburg. Henley&

s Blaine Corkill had a team-best 77.

Medalist Tim Marskey of Pleasant Valley made out with a 72 to lead his club to first-place.

At the Marist Invitiational, Phoenix shot a school record combined team score of 305 to finish first at Tokatee Golf Course.


s previous best was 307 at Quail Point Golf Course in 1998, Kyle Walker&

s first year as coach.

Daniel Engle led Phoenix&

s outstanding finish with a 74 in a tournament with Marist, which finished third in the 3A State Tournament last season.
