AHS girls settle for SOC tie

The Ashland High girls tennis team won three of four singles matches, including a three-set victory for Maddy Stokes in the No. — spot, en route to a 4-4 tie with Southern Oregon Conference rival North Medford, Thursday at Hunter Park.

Stokes won the first set easily over her Black Tornado counterpart, Kenna Goodson, but dropped the second before pulling out a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win.

&

She dominated the first set and then kind of got a little too tentative in the second set,&

Ashland head coach Bridget Zwemke said.

Zwemke added that Stokes has improved since last season.

&

She&

s looking good,&

Zwemke said. &

She puts in a lot of extra time outside of practice working on her game and you can tell that she&

s really dedicated to it.&

The Grizzlies also got straight-set singles wins out of No. — Kayla Moyse and No. — Lila Schreiber.

In doubles play, Ashland&

s No. — team of Niki Jacquat and Olivia Florio defeated Lindsay Adams and Jennifer Dumas in another close match, 6-4, 7-5.

The Grizzlies host Roseburg at noon on Saturday.

Track and field

At Eagle Point, Ashland&

s boys and girls both earned team wins over Eagle Point to register the program&

s first Southern Oregon Conference dual meet sweep &

in quite a while,&

according to head coach Ron Graham.

The Grizz boys won 80-64, while Ashland&

s girls beat EP, 86.5-54.5.

Leading the way for the Ashland boys was senior Jaxon Williams, who won three events &

the shot put, the discus and the triple jump. Williams threw the shot put 43 feet, 6 inches and the discus 142-2. His triple jump was 38-4 1/2.

Three other AHS boys also won multiple events. Senior Alex Lawniczak sprinted to wins in both the 100-meter dash (11.7 seconds) and the 200 (24.4), sophomore Matt Miner won both the 800 (2:08.40) and 1,500 (4:19.70) and senior Ryan Pittman won both the high jump (6-0) and the long jump (20-0).

Also for the Ashland boys, senior Dennis McCaffrey won the 3,000 in 10:14.20, two seconds faster than teammate Jashua Baker (10:16.30).

Sophomore Jordan Kling took the top spot in three events to pace the Ashland girls, who also got multiple wins out of Natalie Hemphill.

Kling won the 100 in 13.40 and the 200 in 28.30, edging sophomore teammate Christina Lawton-Diez in both events.

Hemphill took both the 800 (2:25.10) and the 1,500 (4:56.80), beating her younger sister, second-place sophomore Aria Hemphill, in both events.

Another sophomore, Aubrey Silva, won the shot put with a throw of 22-10 1/2 and placed second in the discus (78-10), despite only recently learning the discipline.

&

She has great potential,&

Graham said of Silva. &

She&

s a natural athlete. Her distances aren&

t that impressive, but she&

s only been practicing a couple weeks. If she sticks with it, she&

s a potential state champion as a senior.&

Also for the Grizz girls, freshman Haley Beal won the 3,000 (11:47.60), junior Chelsey Boehnke won the 300 hurdles (54.40) and junior Maya Nerenberg won the triple jump (31-6).

Sophomore Allison Wren was second in both the long jump (14-8 1/2) and the triple jump (30-10).

&

We don&

t have a whole lot of depth,&

Graham said, &

but what we do have is quality.&
