Conquering all hurdles

They push each other at practice. They feed off one another at meets.

The friendly competition has gone on for six years now.

In a perfect world, South Medford seniors Katrina Stevens and Jan Frodsham would conclude their high school track careers by finishing 1-2 at the Class 4A state track meet next month in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdle races.

That isn't likely to happen, but the talented twosome has dominated the Southern Oregon Conference the past two years.

They were at it again Thursday at Newland Field in a dual meet against Roseburg. Running into a stiff head wind, Stevens won the 100 hurdles in 17.06 seconds and Frodsham was second in 17.26. Stevens claimed the 300 hurdles in 49.6. Frodsham didn't run the longer hurdles race on this day, instead opting for the 200-meter dash to work on her speed.

— The South Medford girls rolled to a 91-54 win in the team scoring. In the boys' side of the coed meet, Roseburg squeaked out a 73-72 victory.

They're our hardest workers, South Medford coach Bill Rowan said of Stevens and Frodsham, who have been running track since they were seventh graders at McLoughlin Middle School. They work hard on the track and in the weight room. If we had a whole team of them we wouldn't lose very many track meets.

Historically, Stevens has been a little faster in the 100 hurdles race and Frodsham slightly superior over the 300-meter barriers. That's because Stevens had a little more speed and Frodsham a little better technique.

But this year, Frodsham has gotten faster and Stevens is more technically sound. Now, it's impossible to predict which girl will win which race.

There's never a meet where I'm going to have it easy as long as Katrina's in the race, Frodsham said. We don't have to wait for a certain meet to get good competition. It's there every time out. It's awesome.

Both Stevens and Frodsham advanced to the state meet last year but neither made it past the qualifying round. This year, they're looking to make some noise at the big dance for track and field.

We'll be a lot more comfortable this year, Stevens said. And more confident.

Stevens has grown to like the 300 hurdles race, which requires as much toughness and grit as it does running talent.

It's about who wants it the most, she said. If you have a lot of heart you can go and get that race.

The South girls got a lot of races Thursday, winning seven of the 10 events on the track.

Notable efforts were turned in by freshman sprinter Rebecca Viets, who won the 400 in 1:02.41, and freshman distance ace Piper Delaney, who claimed the 1,500 in 5:24.4.

The top performance of the day, however, belonged to junior thrower Andrea Herman, who achieved a season-best mark of 124-8 in the discus. Herman also won the shot put with a toss of 33-9&

I did a lot of things wrong today, and so it's encouraging to get the mark I did, said Herman, who finished fourth at the state meet last season. The main thing was, I got myself into good position just before I turned and launched.

The South Medford boys were missing standout sprinter Bret Hamilton, who was sidelined with a leg injury, and that enabled Roseburg to sweep the 100 and 200 dashes.

The Indians also won five of the seven field events, including a state-best and personal-record mark of 15-1 in the pole vault by Adam Brink.

Brink, who won the state title last year as a sophomore, felt a little weak Thursday after suffering a bloody nose that he said lasted 90 minutes the night before.

Knowing I can make that height when I'm not feeling that well is encouraging, said Brink, who didn't enter the competition until the bar moved to 14 feet. I can definitely go higher.
