North's Clarke shows promise in S.O. InviteJohn Clarke played up to his potential in the first of two rounds in the Southern Oregon Invitational boys golf tournament.
The North Medford sophomore tied for second overall with a 3-over par 75 at the Rogue Valley Country Club Friday.
The 10-school tournament concludes today at the Grants Pass Golf Club.
North Eugene, which tied for the title last year with Roseburg, grabbed the first-day lead with a 310 team total. North Medford stands in second place, nine strokes off the pace.
Austin Atkinson of North Eugene posted the low round of the day with a 74. Clarke and Andy Maphet of Grants Pass are tied for second.
John (Clarke) had a breakout tournament so far, North Medford coach Kevin Klabunde said. When you see him on the range you wonder how he could do anything but shoot a 75 or better. For one reason or another he hasn't played up to his range game so far before today.
— Clarke's round was even more impressive considering he did it without a birdie.
A lot of kids had trouble putting and (Clarke) was included in that, said Klabunde. Golf is a game of confidence. Confidence breeds success and success breeds confidence. We're hoping this will get (Clarke) started in the right direction.
The Southern Oregon Invitational doubles as the first two of seven counting tournaments that determine the Southern Oregon Conference champion.
Conference rivals Roseburg, Ashland and Grants Pass are all within eight strokes of the Black Tornado after the opening round.
I knew going into the conference counters it will be a dogfight throughout the season between us, Roseburg, Ashland and Grants Pass, said Klabunde. It's one of the better starting positions we've had the last few years. Hopefully we'll continue that with another sub-320 round tomorrow (today).
