North's Pecktol reaches new heights

Josh Pecktol set a meet record in the boys high jump at the Bob Newland Track and Field Classic Friday and came reasonably close to setting a North Medford school record.

Imagine what might happen once he gets his form down.

He's just scratching the surface ' he has so much potential, Black Tornado jumps coach Andy Pierson said after Pecktol sailed over the bar at 6-foot, 1-inch to break the old meet record of 6-feet even by Hidden Valley's Ryan VanCleave in 2004.

Pecktol's performance was one of the main highlights in the seventh annual meet that showcases the top freshman and sophomore track athletes in Southern Oregon.

Pecktol's victory in the high jump along with a runner-up finish in the triple jump fueled the Black Tornado boys to the team title with 102.5 points.

— On the girls' side of the coed meet, South Medford triumphed with 90.5 points.

Pecktol cleared 6-1 on his third and final attempt, then took a shot at 6-3, which would have broken the North Medford school record of 6-2. He was over the bar on his final attempt at that height but came down on top of it.

He's not getting his hips up and over the bar like he should, but he's a freshman and he's going to be there, Pierson said. And one thing about Josh ' he loves to compete.

Pecktol said it's been a little difficult absorbing all the new technical stuff the North coaches have thrown his way. During a meet he simply clears his mind and jumps.

When I'm at practice I'm really focusing on improving my form, but in a meet it's best to just forget everything and jump, he said. All I'm thinking about is getting over that bar.

Pecktol's favorite sport is basketball ' he played on the North Medford varsity team last winter as a freshman ' but track is gaining ground. He ran his first high hurdles race of the season Friday and also placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 37-3&

188; .

I like it a lot, he said of track. There's some work involved but if you work at it, you get rewarded.

The best race on the track Friday came in the girls 800, where four runners broke the meet record. Henley freshman Taylor Wallace charged past Hidden Valley sophomore Ashley Gilkey over the final 75 meters to win in 2 minutes, 19.45 seconds. Gilkey was second in 2:20.05, followed by Klamath Union freshman Chelsa McDonnell in 2:23.25 and Ashland sophomore Aria Hemphill in 2:23.62.

The old record of 2:25.1, set by South Medford's Noi Hilgendorf in 2001, took a thorough beating.

My strategy was to run behind (Gilkey) until the last 300 meters and then kick past her, Wallace said.

The diminutive Gilkey fought like a pitbull, however, and held Wallace off until the home stretch, where the powerful Henley runner finally pulled into the lead.

Those two girls dueled it out, Hidden Valley coach Stan Goodell said of Wallace and Gilkey. And a couple of those other kids weren't far behind. That was just an outstanding race.

The girls mile also had an electric finish as Grants Pass sophomore Lorine Cruz overtook South Medford's Piper Delaney over the final few meters to win in 5:36.7. Delaney was second in 5:37.2 and Hemphill was close behind in 5:37.8.

Other notable performers included:

Eagle Point sophomore Jacob Ringrose, who achieved a 1&

189; -foot personal record to win the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet.

I just kind of figured things out today, said Ringrose, who nearly tied the meet record of 13-6.

Ringrose got a tip from former EP standout and meet co-meet record-holder Rob Johnston during the meet.

He just told me to rock back more, Ringrose said, and it worked.

South Medford freshman Steve Adams, who dominated the shot put field with a lifetime-best mark of 46-1.

Adams had been experimenting with the spin technique this season but went back to the glide technique Friday and had six throws over 45 feet.

I'm just not ready for the spin, Adams said. I'm going to use it next year but it takes a lot of work and right now the glide is the way to go for me. I could feel the power today. I've got a lot bigger throw in me.

Butte Falls sophomore Cortney Ellis. The Loggers' one-person team launched the shot put 34-6 and also won the discus with a mark of 98-9.

North Medford sophomore Almeir Barlow, who blew away the competition in the boys 200 with a time of 22.97.

Henley's 4x400 relay squad of Wallace, Stephanie North, Melanie Johnson and Katie Waugh, which blazed to a meet-record time of 4:09.97. The foursome beat runner-up South Medford by nearly 13 seconds and its winning time is the second-fastest in the state among Class 3A schools.
