Indian golfers excel on their home course
ROSEBURG ' The home course proved to Roseburg's liking during a Southern Oregon Conference golf match Monday at Roseburg Country Club.
Darwin Durchanek fired a 2-under-par 70 to grab medalist honors, and MacKenzie Gordon had a 1-over 73 to pace the Indians, who beat runner-up Grants Pass by 12 strokes.
Andy Maphet had a 73 to lead Grants Pass, and Christian Bernard shot a 73 to fuel third-place North Medford.

ALL-SOC TOURNEY ' At Klamath Falls, Grants Pass star Justine Hix shot a 1-under-par 71 and walked off with her customary medalist title, but North Medford's depth came through to give the Black Tornado the team victory at the Running Y Resort.
North Medford's Christina Thompson carded a 78 and was the only player other than Hix to shoot in the 70s.

PHOENIX WINS ' At Klamath Falls, freshman standout Daniel Engle shot par 72 to grab medalist honors and fuel Phoenix to a win in a Skyline Conference boys tournament at the Running Y.
Phoenix carded a 308, its second-best team score of the season behind its school record 305 at Tokatee Golf Club earlier this season.
Runner-up Blaine Corkill led Henley to a second-place finish with his 3-over 75.

NORTH MEDFORD 3, CRATER — ' At Central Point, Taylor Schmidt threw six scoreless innings after giving up a run in the first to help North Medford slip by Crater in nonconference softball.
Tied 1-all in the top of the fifth, Amanda Volgarino grounded out to third base, but Katie Gould reached home on a fielder's choice to put the go-ahead run on the board.
Gould went 4-for-4 with two runs and Jessica Sandoval went 3-for-4.
Kirstin Davidson went 3-for-3 for the Comets (12-4, 5-1 SOC), who will play another nonconference make-up game at Ashland today at 4:30 p.m.

PHOENIX 14, ILLINOIS VALLEY 4 ' At Talent, Phoenix junior Nick Abney struck out four in his first varsity start and helped the Pirates to the Skyline win.
Cody Barrett's two-run single was part of a six-run fifth inning for the Pirates after IV (0-9 Skyline) had tied the game 4-4 in the top of the inning.
Phoenix took advantage of four walks in its big inning and had nine free passes on the day.
Ryan Robinson went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs for Phoenix, including a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning to give it a 3-0 lead.
The Pirates (11-5, 7-2 Skyline) had 11 steals, pushing their season total to more than 70.
