Pirates shoot all-time low
EAGLE POINT ' The Phoenix High School record books haven't stood much of a chance this season in boys golf.
The Pirates shot an all-time low of 296 Wednesday to win the seven-team Pirate Invitational at Stone Ridge Golf Course. The record-low surpassed the old mark of 305 Phoenix shot previously this season.
Freshman Daniel Engle led the way by winning medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69.
We played extremely well, said Phoenix coach Kyle Walker. Anything under 300 is really good golf. I thought we might have a chance at doing it.
Engle's 69 was a season-best for Phoenix. He shot a 33 on the front nine and finished with a 36 on the back.
Daniel is just solid, Walker said. He's not real big but he hits it well. He's got the temperament of a very good golfer.
— Jesse Taylor added a 74 for Phoenix.
Henley's Blaine Corkill was second with a 72. Marist, last year's third-place team at state, finished runner-up with a 306.
In girls, Sutherlin, behind medalist Jacqueline Olson's 68, cruised to the team victory with a 343.
Henley took second with a 389 and North Valley third with a 404.

Nonconference Softball
GRANTS PASS 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 2 ' At Grants Pass, Chelsea Chamberlain drilled a two-out, two-run homer over the left-field fence to cap a three-run sixth inning and fuel Grants Pass to the nonconference win.
The Cavers (14-5-1) trailed 2-0 and were hitless through five innings. But in the sixth, Cami Bennett beat out a slap-bunt single and Karleigh Prestianni hit an RBI double before Chamberlain's dramatic home run.
South Medford (7-6) took a 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles by Kira Vandergriff and Alyssa Dixon and extended it to 2-0 in the fourth on a solo homer by Marissa Towry.
