Tornado second in team tennis tournament
North Medford lost out on the team title in the very last match of the two-day Ashland/North Medford Invitational boys tennis tournament.
But Black Tornado coach Larry Fields couldn't be too disappointed, given the event at Varsity Courts brought together 10 of the state's best teams.
South Eugene's No. — doubles team triumphed in the finale over its Barlow counterparts, giving the Axemen enough team points to win the title.
South Eugene scored 96 points, North Medford 92 and Barlow 77. Ashland, the only other Southern Oregon Conference entrant besides North, was fourth with 49 points.
It was the very last match of the day, said Fields, and the only way it could have been better is if it were a North team against South Eugene ... and we won.
But we're feeling good about it. We're just getting ready to go into district and state, and it feels like we're doing pretty good.
— The SOC district meet is May 4 at North.
The standout tandem of David Longmire and Tanner Borg led the way for the Black Tornado, winning at No. — doubles. They defeated Rusty Hand and Tom Kuenzli of Corvallis, 7-5, 6-2, in the finals.
The field included the state's top four teams, said Fields.
After Longmire, a sophomore, and Borg, a freshman, lost a match last week at the Jesuit tournament, they watched film and were intent on improving.
They knew they had some things to clean up, said Fields. They worked hard on those all week and they paid off.
The Black Tornado had two singles players make the finals.
At No. 1, freshman Colt Hoeptner lost to South Eugene's Walt James, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2, sophomore Michael Tribble defeated South Eugene's David Rocklin, 7-5, 6-3.
