Late runs lift Rogue River over Pirates

Prep Softball

ROGUE RIVER ' The Rogue River softball team took advantage of its opportunities Tuesday in a Skyline Conference softball matchup with Phoenix.

The Chieftains scored all their runs during their final three at-bats to post a 6-2 victory over the Pirates.

Pitcher Karly Lusk had only one strikeout ' the final out of the game ' but wiggled out of early trouble to keep Phoenix at bay.

The Pirates stranded nine runners over the first four innings.

We couldn't come through with the big two-out hit, said Phoenix coach Brent Watts. Rogue River scored the two runs in the fourth, and our backs were kind of against the wall.

The Chieftains are now percentage points ahead of North Valley for second place in conference. Phoenix holds sole possession of fourth place, two games behind Rogue River and the Knights.

— Rogue River (10-6, 8-4 Skyline) scored two runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.

The Pirates (10-9, 6-6 Skyline) had 11 hits but committed five errors to aid Rogue River.

Jessica Lea went 3-for-4 and Kaitlyn Hoffman was 2-for-4 to lead Rogue River. Talia Engle and Tera Fry had two hits apiece for Phoenix.
