North Medford finishes off a dominant romp in SOC girls district golf

The North Medford girls golf team was a cohesive unit for the nine months following last season's state tournament appearance.

From playing in junior tournaments to practice rounds with each other, the Black Tornado and its four returning seniors had eyes on the Southern Oregon Conference prize.

On Tuesday, North cashed in on its potential by sweeping its way to an SOC district tournament championship at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Buoyed by four top-10 finishers, the Tornado capped an unbeaten season by scoring a 343 Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 693. Grants Pass was second at 767, followed by Roseburg (833), South Medford (846) and last year's cahmpion, Ashland (525).

Grants Pass senior Justine Hix won her first district title by shooting a 2-over-par 74 for a two-day total of 151. North's Snow Powers was second at 163, and teammate Christina Thompson was third with a 167.

— Tornado coach Tim Sam knew this bunch had the makings of something special this year.

Our consistency comes from a lot of hard work by the girls, said Sam, who had four different players earn medalist honors this year. Those five girls played virtually for the last nine months. This (title) is the result of that.

North's Sheena Knight took fourth with a 174, while Roseburg's TC Rahn was fifth with a 184. Black Tornado's Abby Perkins tied for sixth with Roseburg's Kendra Pennington with a 189.

The top five individuals and top two teams qualify for the Class 4A state tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City.

Powers was three strokes behind Hix to start the day but, after faltering on holes 7 and 8, the Tornado senior decided to finish out as strong as possible.

Powers took seventh at last year's district and shaved 11 strokes off of her score this time around.

I started off trying to beat Justine, said Powers, who shot an 83 Tuesday after an 80 Monday. But after a couple of bad holes, I just wanted to stay steady.

Much like the team's steadiness throughout the season, both Thompson and Powers were unflappable during North's run to the title.

We knew if we were going to win district, we'd have to work real hard, said Thompson, who shot an 82 Tuesday. I'm excited about how we played and I can't wait for state.

Hix will go to state for the fourth straight year.

The Grants Pass senior, who's headed to Portland State University on a golf scholarship, took second at state last season.

My goal this whole season was to win districts and get back to state, said Hix. I felt I hit the ball a little better today.

I'm definitely excited to finally win (an SOC title).
