Phoenix boys hold down second at state

Prep Boys Golf

REDMOND ' Phoenix High golf coach Kyle Walker didn't want to put too much pressure on his players during the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament at Eagle Crest Resort Monday.

Walker set a goal of 310 total strokes. The Pirates shot 311 and find themselves trailing only Marist (304) in the team standings.

Daniel Engle shot a 4-over-par 76 to lead the way for Phoenix, which has never won so much as a trophy (top four) at the tournament. Engle is in a six-way tie for fourth place after Day 1.

J.T. Compher and Michael Stanfield each fired 77s for the Pirates, while Luke Nickodemus came in with an 81.

Maybe I should have told them to shoot 300 and they would have shot 301, Walker said with a chuckle. But really, I didn't want to put undo pressure on them.

The kids know they can play better. They beat Marist twice in tournaments this year. I wouldn't count us out just yet.

— Defending individual champion Jesse Schutte of Siuslaw topped the leaderboard Monday with a 3-under-par 69. Wilsonville's Zack Johnson holds down second after carding an even-par 72, and Marist's Allen Kelley is third with a 74.

Engle would have been near the top of the leaderboard had he not suffered a triple bogey on the 17th hole.

He was frustrated by that one bad hole but fourth place isn't bad and he's got a chance to move up, Walker said.

Wilsonville trails Phoenix by just two shots in the team standings at 313. Sisters is in fourth place at 318.

Phoenix placed sixth at the tournament a year ago.
