Tornado stands seventh at girls tourney

OREGON CITY ' The North Medford High girls had only one player break 90 but managed to pull into seventh place at the Class 4A state golf tournament at Stone Creek Golf Club Monday.

Christina Thompson shot a 16-over-par 88 to lead the Black Tornado. Snow Powers carded a 90, Abby Perkins shot a 94 and Sheena and Stacie Knight each shot 101s for North Medford.

Powers started impressively, shooting a 41 on the front nine, but slipped to 49 on the back.

Defending champion Rebecca Kim of Tigard got off to a hot start with a 3-under 69 to top the leaderboard after Day — of the two-day tournament.

Canby's Breanna Smith is five shots back at 74, while Grants Pass' Justine Hix is third at 76.

Summit of Bend leads Jesuit of Beaverton by seven shots in the team race. Gresham and Lincoln round out the top four squads.

Wilsonville's Agatha Brzezinski is the first-day leader with a 1-over-par 73.

Sutherlin, with 351 total strokes, enjoys a 12-stroke lead over Ontario in the race for the team championship.
