Southridge ends season for Cavers

Prep Softball

BEAVERTON ' Grants Pass ran into a buzz saw in the third round of the Class 4A state softball playoffs Wednesday.

Defending state champion Southridge ended the Cavers season with an 11-0, five-inning home victory.

They were at another level than us, Grants Pass coach Clay Rounsaville said. We got caught by a team on the upswing that was there last year.

Skyhawks junior pitcher Megan Schaefer struck out two and limited Grants Pass to one hit.

(Schaefer) wasn't overpowering, said Rounsaville. When we hit the ball, they made plays. They're sound defensively.

The third-ranked Skyhawks broke through with three runs in the second inning off Grants Pass starter Chelsea Chamberlain. Tarika Brown sparked the rally with a two-run double.

— Alicia Hawes' inside-the-park grand slam in the third inning put the Metro League champions ahead 7-0.

Then Krista Kelly knocked one over the fence for a three-run homer in Southridge's four-run fourth inning.

It was one of those things no matter what we threw across the plate they not only hit it but pounded the ball, said Rounsaville. Once the wheels started to fall off, we kind of let it get away.

The sophomore Chamberlain accounted for the Cavers' lone hit with a fourth-inning single.

Grants Pass, which won the No. 2 seed in a three-way playoff after completing the Southern Oregon Conference regular season in a tie for second, finishes the season at 21-9.

We're surely not complaining, said Rounsaville. We have a young team and had a lot of good things happen for us this year.
