Southern Oregon band camp opens doors for all ages this summer

Southern Oregon middle school music students and adults, representing four generations, will have the chance again this summer to perform at the third annual Middle School/Adult Band Camp.

Band Camp 2006 is co-sponsored by Medford Parks and Recreation, Larry’s Music, and the New Horizons Band, a senior citizens concert band.

It’s designed specifically for students who will be in seventh, eighth and ninth grades next fall. Also invited to attend the camp, are adults who are looking for an opportunity to play their instruments and mentor young musicians during the summer . The New Horizons Band encourages adults of any ability to participate in the program. The program especially targets adults who have not played for a while and wish to begin playing again.

The program offers students and adults the opportunity to improve performance skills while working with their peers and seasoned musicians in a relaxed environment, said instructor Jerry Dunn, who has taught music since 1970 and plays several brass instruments.

Sessions will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 6 through Aug. 24.

Classes will be held at Medford Parks and Recreation Santo Community Center, which is located at the corner of McAndrews and Columbus Avenues. Cost is $40.

“It’s a fun opportunity to continue performing in the summer when instruments might be gathering dust,” Dunn added. “The New Horizons Band Performs regularly in the Medford and Ashland areas. The New Horizons Band recently performed at the Ashland Memorial Day ceremony. By combining adults with middle school students, students learn what a lifelong thing music is and adults gain satisfaction from mentoring students.”

Playing together with the New Horizons Band, students will rehearse standard and advanced middle school band literature. And, at the end of the program, students and band members will perform in concert.

Registration for the camp will begin July 6. Contact Jerry Dunn at 472-9339 for more information.
