Grizz boys edge Crater on the road

At Central Point, Nate Roupp took advantage of a loose ball in front of the goal and scored in the 38th minute to give Ashland a 1-0 Southern Sky Conference triumph over Crater on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies' Brendan Golding took a shot that rebounded off a post, and Roupp was there to punch it into the net as Ashland improved to 4-0 in league and 8-0-1 overall.

The Comets (2-5-1, 1-2 SSC) got strong play from sweeper Jason Pardee, outside fullback Jon Grether and defender Junior Iboa.

Ashland next plays Tuesday at Mazama.

At San Francisco, Ashland rowers Torsten Heycke and Robert Lombardi earned gold medals in the 5-kilometer Wine Country Rowing Regatta last weekend.

Heycke won the lightweight masters single event in a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds, while Lombardi finished third in the masters single 50-plus division in 17:39. Heycke and Lombardi had the fastest two raw (unadjusted for age) times of all masters entered in the regatta; only a Stanford collegiate rower in the open division had a faster time.

After an hour and a half break, Heycke and Lombardi teamed up to race in the men's masters double, which they won in 16:45. Corinne Lombardi, racing in her first singles race, placed third in the women's masters single event in 20:52. The course was held on a curvy section of the Petaluma river. A flooding tide made for quick times.

"I don't think I'll ever be able to repeat that fast a time for a 5k event," Heycke said. "The incoming tide definitely made us all faster. The wakes from the motorized boats slowed us down and the curves definitely played a role, but the up-river drift trumped both."
