Grizzlies bite back late

MEDFORD &

Ashland scored four goals in the third period to slip by South Medford, 5-3, in a Southern Oregon Youth Hockey game Wednesday night at The RRRink.

Lewis Sebrell had a goal and two assists for the Grizzlies, while Josh McLaughlin scored twice to go with a helper. Tiffany Schoonover and Stephen McLaughlin each had a goal and Casey Skolnik assisted on another, as Ashland improved to 4-3.

"Basically, we started playing like a team," Ashland head coach Chris Bonelli said of the comeback. "We had better puck possession than (South Medford) had and South became a little undisciplined. We should never have allowed ourselves to get behind to begin with."

Sebrell, who entered the night ranked third in the league in points, now has 11 goals and seven assists on the season.

For the Panthers (1-5), Lane Littlefield had two assists and Wyatt Small, Kevin Weber and Zack McDonald each had a goal. Samantha Andrews had an assist for South and goalie John Adamson stopped 33 of 38 shots.

Ashland goalie Kyle Smelzer made 13 saves on 16 shot attempts.

Ashland plays Crater on Saturday. The Comets lost 7-3 to North Medford on Wednesday to fall to 3-4.

College Football

Southern Oregon University announced Wednesday that the SOU football team will forfeit one of its three 2006 regular season wins &

a 16-13 comeback victory over Menlo on Sept. 9 &

for using an ineligible player.

The Raiders' record will drop to 2-7.

"It is a very disappointing situation and the true victims are the student-athletes and the coaching staff," said SOU Athletic Director Dr. Dennis Francois. "However, with any situation such as this, it forces us to critically examine our current processes and make refinements so this situation does not happen again."

The forfeit will cost SOU one of the team's few bright spots from '06. Jared Elarmo returned a kickoff 79 yards for a stunning game-winning touchdown with 42 seconds to go, as the Raiders overcame a late 13-9 deficit to improve to 1-1.
