On Saturday the Ashland Middle School will host the annual District 8 Solo and Ensemble Festival for Winds and Percussion. This event is free and open to the public. There will be performances at the middle school throughout the day, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 4:15 p.m. There are 17 schools represented and over 300 students participating. This event is a competition for the high school students &
many of whom will be seleceted go on to the state tournament &
and a non-competitive "festival" for the middle school students.
Due to support from the Ashland Schools Foundation and the levy, the Ashland Middle School Band Program is able to put a strong emphasis on this event. All of the Concert Band students formed ensembles in January and have been receiving weekly coaching sessions from the following local professional musicians and teachers: Debra Harris, Jenna Giles, Bruce Dresser, Dennis Freese, Daryl Fjeldheim, Tom Freeman, Terry Lund, Angel McDonald and Rachel Nordahl.
In addition to sending 28 ensembles to the festival, the middle school will also have 24 soloists performing.
The Ashland Schools provided them with professional accompanists that will compliment and enhance their performances. This year's piano players are Luna Bitzer, Aaron Blenkush, Melissa Archer and Ashley Hoe.
The students in the middle school band program are excited about this event and have been rehearsing for many hours during lunch and after school. Each ensemble and soloist is prepared to give an excellent performance.
