SOU wrestler Ulrey places sixth at NAIA nationals

SIOUX CITY, Iowa &

Jimmy Ulrey placed sixth at the NAIA wrestling championships Saturday, the first time in three trips to nationals the former North Medford standout has earned All-American honors.

He was one of three Raiders to garner that distinction. The others were Trevor Lofstedt at 125 pounds and Joel Gibson, another former Black Tornado, at 165.

The Raiders scored 55 teams points, placing 11th.

Ulrey was the lone SOU wrestler to make it as far as the semifinals of the championship bracket, giving him hope of a national championship at 157 pounds entering the start of action Saturday.

However, his opponent in the semis, Embry-Riddle's Hayden Harrison, proved formidable, taking care of Ulrey then charging to the national championship.

Harrison recorded a technical fall over the fifth-ranked Ulrey in their fourth meeting of the season, 21-5 win in 6:29. Harrison then defeated David Clemens of Campbellsville, 12-7 for the title.

Ulrey dropped into the consolation bracket, where he lost to Oklahoma City's Brandon Benson by fall in 6:04. In the ensuing fifth-place match, Ulrey was pinned by Jason Bilinski of Dana in 1:33. The Raider junior ended up with a 2-3 record in the tournament.

Lofstedt, a sophomore from Roseburg, placed fourth. He lost in the championship quarterfinals on Friday, but rebounded with three consolation wins before dropping a 3-2 decision to Richard Byrd of Embry-Riddle in the finals. He was 5-2 in the two days.

Gibson, a senior, placed seventh. On Saturday, he fell in the consolation semifinals to Waldorf's Nate Stirgus, 3-1, then won by forfeit over Ryan Smith of Great Falls in the seventh-place match. He was 5-2 at the championships.

Track and field

Southern Oregon's Emily Dunn won two individual events and ran a leg on two winning relay teams as the Southern Oregon women edged Oregon Tech by one point in Saturday's four-team Artie Sullivan Invitational.

The Raider men used victories in both relays and won five individual events to capture the team title.

Dunn triumphed in the 100 (12.94) and 200 meters (26.96), while Alicia Jeffers was also a double winner (1,500 and 3,000) for the Raiders.

On the men's side, the Raiders received victories from Daniel Cecchini (high jump), Ryan Musselman (pole vault), Jacob Hayden (400), Trevor Palmer (800) and Jeff Olsen (3,000).
