SOU president expands Civic Engagement Program
When SOU President Mary Cullinan announced earlier this week the final budget plan for Southern Oregon University, she included the vision for the future of SOU. The University is seeking to produce a culture that is geared toward excellence in teaching and learning, an environment that is creative, classrooms that are vibrant and nurturing, a sense of community and civic responsibility that extends beyond the classroom, and a campus that is challenging yet supportive for our students, faculty and staff.
To achieve this SOU is expanding its Civic Engagement Program, dedicated to the mission of improving the civic responsibility of Southern Oregon University's higher education through co-curricular student involvement in and service to the Rogue Valley community.
The program will be coordinated by an Americorps VISTA member, , who joined the SOU team this week. SOU was selected as a host site for a VISTA member through a grant competition in the fall of '06. Currently, Oregon Campus Compact VISTA members are serving at 7 higher education centers.
This Civic Engagement Program will will impact the Rogue Valley by helping students make more meaning of their university studies through direct involvement and application in the community both on and off campus, according to an SOU press release.
This program will boost cooperation between students and student groups. This program will benefit students by providing them with the opportunities for involvement in issues that they care about within their community. This program will also make civic engagement more of an everyday part of student life, which then becomes a smooth transition into civic life following graduation.
