Rogue Valley city slogans through the years

Ashland: When visitors flocked to Lithia Park in the early 1900s for its renowned mineral fountains, "Ashland Grows While Lithia Water Flows" appeared in some literature. "Where the Palm Meets the Pine" appeared in more recent decades. The Chamber of Commerce, recognizing all the city has to offer with its Oregon Shakespeare Festival and culture, has adopted "Destination Ashland: The Place for Your Visit, Your Business, Your Life."

Central Point: "The Fair City" was adopted in May 1975 because of its close proximity to the Jackson County Fairgrounds.

Eagle Point: With a nod toward Crater Lake and others, the town calls itself "Gateway to the Lakes."

Gold Hill: A slogan has never been suggested. Public Works Director Royal Gasso offers, "Gold Hill: A City in Need of a Slogan."

Jacksonville: "The historic city with a progressive future" won a contest in 1947 sponsored by the Jacksonville Progressive Association. The Jacksonville Chamber more recently began using "Jacksonville, Always a Good Time."

Medford: In 1926, it sported a banner declaring itself a "Gateway to Crater Lake." In 1980, the Chamber of Commerce launched a campaign with Huggy Bear as the mascot, declaring "We hug visitors in Medford." In 1999, a new slogan proclaimed, "Medford — the Center of it All," which has been upgraded to "The Center of the Rogue Valley."

Phoenix: Its motto recognizes its larger namesake, declaring via its Web site, "The Other Phoenix."

Talent: With a new City Hall, library, renovated police headquarters and other major projects in the works, Talent's slogan seems particularly fitting: "Small Town, Big Dreams, Bright Future!"

Upper Rogue: A slew of small cities in northern Jackson County fall under the Upper Rogue Regional Tourism Alliance slogan, "The Upper Rogue: A Place for All Seasons." Butte Falls is often known as "The Biggest Little Town in Oregon," while Shady Cove holds the recognition for "Gateway to Crater Lake National Park."
