Another day, another split

Southern Oregon rallied for a 5-4 win in Game 2 to cap a Cascade Conference doubleheader split with Albertson on Saturday at University Field.

Albertson won the opener 7-6.

In the nightcap, the Raiders (13-26, 8-10 Cascade) trailed 4-2 before a three-run outburst in the sixth. After Alicia Caudill and Becca Shelamer singled, second baseman Brin Tamblin connected for a one-out home run.

Southern Oregon pitcher Melissa Wilt went the distance and struck out seven for the win.

Tamlin had three hits for the Raiders, while Natalie Nielsen, Caudill and Shelamer added two hits each.

In the first game, Karla Price had two hits and three RBIs for the Raiders. Albertson scored five runs on five hits in the sixth to overcome a 4-2 deficit.

College Track and Field

At Klamath Falls, Southern Oregon junior Daniel Cecchini went a lifetime-best 6 feet, 9 inches in the high jump Saturday during a dual meet against Oregon Tech.

The leap qualifies him for the NAIA national meet.

Oregon Tech defeated both the Raiders' men and women, 101-54 and 88-66, respectively.

Raider pole vaulter Grant Brannaman won the event with a national provisional qualifying mark of 15-2.

Brett Hopt picked up two wins for the Raiders in the hurdles. Other SOU men's highlights came on wins from Jacob Hayden in the 400 (49.93) and Kevin Jeffers in the 1,500 (4:11.20).

In the women's meet, Southern Oregon sprinter Emily Dunn won the 200 and lost the 100 in a controversial fashion. Dunn finished with the same 100 time (12.55) as Kelsi Haylett, but the Oregon Tech runner was awarded the win. Raider coach Mike Jones thought Dunn should have been awarded a dead heat at the very least.

SOU's Mary Converse won two events (400 hurdles, high jump) placed second in another and ran a leg on two winning relay teams.
