Oregon Cultural Trust grants go to local artists

The Jackson County Cultural Coalition and the Arts Council of Southern Oregon have awarded grants totaling $15,475 to arts, heritage and humanities organizations throughout Jackson County in the third round of grants under the auspices of the Oregon Cultural Trust.

The local recipients were chosen by the Cultural Coalition from applications submitted in August. Recipients of grants for 2008 are:

  • Arts Council of Southern Oregon — $1,500 for its Artists in the Schools residency program serving elementary schools.
  • Ashland Gallery Association — $700 to support the Gala and Quick Draw auction pre-event for the Taste of Ashland.
  • Ballet Folklórico — $1,200 for its cultural ambassador project.
  • Boys & Girls Club of the Rogue Valley —$1,125 for enhancement of the "Arts 4 Kids" program in Talent and Phoenix.
  • Dancing People Company — $900 for a high school residency program in Phoenix.
  • Friends of the Ashland Library — $1,000 for the Chautauqua Poets & Writers series.
  • Girl Scouts of Winema — $900 for its Vamos a Bailar: Let's Dance.
  • Kids Unlimited of Oregon — $1,000 for a youth mural program serving Hedrick and McLoughlin middle schools.
  • Medford Parks & Recreation — $750 to bring children with special needs and economic disadvantages together to create individual plaques of local heroes.
  • Rogue Gallery & Art Center — $1,000 for a master botanical artist demonstration during Art in Bloom.
  • Rogue Opera — $1,200 for its "Operantics!" program.
  • Rogue River Middle School — $1,000 to bring "History Alive!" and Oregon Shakespeare Festival presentations to schools.
  • Southern Oregon Repertory Singers — $500 to support outreach to elementary schools.
  • Talent Historical Society — $1,000 to support research and preservation of the Welborn Beeson house in Talent.
  • The Siskiyou Institute — $700 for its Artists in the Schools program.
  • Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon — $1,000 for educational and outreach initiatives for youth.

The checks will be presented at an awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Large Community Room at the Central Library, 205 S. Central Ave., Medford.
