Grizzlies start off tourney with pair of victories

Ashland kept its perfect start intact by defeating Monarch (Colo.) 6-3 and Piedra Vista (N.M.) 4-2 on Tuesday at the 33-team Coach Bob National Invitational at Anthem, Ariz.

Sam Gaviglio helped Ashland (7-0) to the opening-game victory by pitching 5 1-3 strong innings, which included seven strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, Nick Hall was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Owen Baldrica came through with a two-run single in the third that helped the Grizzlies pull away early.

Charlie Sebrell earned the win in the second game after Ashland took control with three runs in the fourth inning. Hayden Miller provided the key hit, a bases-loaded double to right center that scored two.

"I called (Miller) down to the third base line and I told him that he was going to get a fastball and he needed to jump all over it," Ashland head coach Don Senestraro said. "He nailed it, and when I saw him at second base he had a big smile on his face."

Ashland plays its last game of the tournament today against Ralston Valley (Colo.), then will stick around for another day to watch a spring training game.

"We're going to come out of this a better team, win, lose or draw," Senestraro said.
