Rogue River principal will cover two schools
The Rogue River Elementary School principal will do double duty next school year, serving simultaneously as the middle school principal in a move to help make up a possible $800,000 budget shortfall in the rural school district of about 1,000 pupils.
Rogue River Elementary Principal Thomas McCormick will continue his duties at the elementary school while filling the shoes of Rogue River Middle School Principal KathiSue Summers, who plans to return to the classroom.
The move is expected to save the school district about $90,000, said Rogue River schools Superintendent Harry Vanikiotis.
Summers will work next year as a part-time technology teacher and part-time dean at the middle school, where she will lead an effort to cover new technology-related state academic standards.
Restructuring is happening at multiple school districts in Jackson County and the rest of Oregon because of revenue shortfalls stemming from the recession, and most districts are still making decisions for next year.
Rogue River is examining cutting staff, school days and possibly programs and services, Vanikiotis said.
The district's budget for 2008-09 was $12 million.
Its 2009-10 budget proposal will be presented at 5:30 p.m. May 28 at Rogue River High School, 1898 E. Evans Creek Road, Rogue River.
