Medford house to be burned as training today

Firefighters will burn a dilapidated farmhouse owned by the city this morning as part of a training exercise.

The city bought the property at 1612 Orchard Home Drive as possible right of way for a future extension of Cunningham Lane, but the 1925 house there was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

The training burn is set for 11 a.m. Fire crews will work from Lozier Lane, and traffic on Orchard Home Drive won't be interrupted, said Dan Petersen, Medford Fire Department's deputy chief of administration and training.

The department has teamed with the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, the Oregon Fire Instructors Association and the Rogue Interagency Training Association to offer training on conducting live fire exercises.

Instructors from the Illinois Fire Service Institute will teach experienced firefighters from around the state how to safely plan and conduct such training.
