Firefighters battling the Burnt Peak fire near Lost Creek Lake expect to have it contained by tonight, despite spot fires that ignited Thursday afternoon.

Rolling debris started four small fires outside the line carved around the blaze, Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou said. Crews attacked them immediately, preventing the loss of additional acreage.

More detailed mapping now estimates the fire's size at 215 acres. Incident Commander Steve Wetmore estimated the fire is 85 percent contained and said in a fire update this morning that he expects full containment by 8 p.m.

Some fire engines already have been released, Ballou said. Other crews will patrol and mop up the fire for several days.

The Williams Creek fire 15 miles east of Glide in the Umpqua National Forest has grown to 2,168 acres, officials said in an update released this morning. It is 10 percent contained, but significant growth is expected on all three sides.

Eight residences are threatened and a 10-mile stretch of Highway 138 remains closed.

The fire is burning toward private and Bureau of Land Management forestland protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry. Firefighters are trying to minimize the effect on private lands.

A total of 463 people are working on the fire. The cause of the blaze, reported Tuesday afternoon, is under investigation.
