SOU to add Chinese class

Southern Oregon University will collaborate with St. Mary's School to offer Mandarin Chinese instruction this fall.

St. Mary's School in Medford started offering Chinese three years ago as part of the Confucius Institute of the Office of Chinese Language Council International , also known as Hanban, and became the first secondary school Confucius classroom in the United States.

When St. Mary's had an opportunity to bring a second Chinese language teacher to the school this fall, Head of School Frank Phillips approached SOU about teaming up to provide instruction to additional students.

Daniel Morris, director of foreign languages in SOU's language, literature and philosophy department welcomed the opportunity to prepare students to work in the global economy. With the addition of Chinese to the curriculum, SOU will be the only regional university in the Oregon University System to offer both Chinese and Japanese, he said in a statement released today.

The beginning Mandarin Chinese class will be offered from 1 to 1:50 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays on the Ashland campus. It is listed in the SOU class schedule under foreign languages. The course will be taught by Zheng Ling, a native of China and a trained language teacher.

For more information or to enroll, contact the foreign language office at 552-6435 or e-mail morris@sou.edu.
