Fall leaves picked up curbside by haulers

Autumn brings an explosion of fall color and with it a yard full of beautiful but pesky fallen leaves.

You have to rake them up yourself, but getting rid of them is as easy as putting the bags by your trash can, thanks to programs offered through Rogue Disposal & Recycling and Ashland Sanitary & Recycling.

Both companies will pick up bagged leaves through November and December.

In Medford, leaf pickup is free and scheduled by north and south zones, which are roughly divided by East and West Main streets, Hillcrest Road and Cherry Lane.

For those living in the north zone, bagged leaves will be picked up Nov. 9-13, Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, and Dec. 21-25.

For those living in the south zone, leaf pickup will be Nov. 16-20, Dec. 7-11 and Dec. 28 through Jan. 1.

Homeowners should scoop the leaves into heavy-duty plastic bags (30-gallon yard bags work best), tie the bags shut and carry them to the curb in the public right of way. Bags should be placed on the sidewalk or on the curb, rather than in the gutter, where they could block water.

If no curb is available, place the bags off the roadway, about 8 feet from the pavement.

Make sure the bags are at the curb by 6:30 a.m. Monday the week of pickup. There is no limit on the number of bags, but they must be free of tree branches, lawn clippings or other debris. Bags should not weigh more than 40 pounds.

Collected leaves will be turned into garden compost, according to Rogue Disposal.

Leaf bags are available for 30 for $1 or 10 bags at no cost from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Rogue Disposal Customer Service Center, 8001 Table Rock Road, White City.

Ten bags for free also are available in the Medford city manager's office, Room 312, City Hall.

In Ashland, compostable bags for collecting and disposing of leaves are available for purchase from Ashland Sanitary & Recycling at 170 Oak St. The biodegradable bags cost $14.50 for a package of five and include curbside pickup by Ashland Sanitary. Each bag can hold up to 35 pounds of leaves.

The city of Ashland is offering a discount on the bags. From Oct. 26 through Nov. 6, a package of five bags may be purchased for $7.50. The bags are available on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of two packages per Ashland household (be prepared to show identification).

The bagged leaves will be picked up on regular "green debris" garbage collection days during the months of November and December. Any leftover bags can be used the following year.

Property owners are responsible for removing and disposing of fallen leaves on their property and from the sidewalks adjacent to their property.
