Go ahead, fall all over yourselves

Today is the first full day of autumn, time to put away the swim gear for another year and start thinking about falling leaves and sweaters instead. You can think about the Rogue Valley's history, too, in events set today.

Ashland's parks department is offering a free walking tour of town from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting at the plaza drinking fountains. Participants will hear stories of early Ashland history, Shasta Takelma culture, pioneer history and about Chatauqua, Lithia Park, the Shakespeare Festival, railroad history, historic architecture and more. Advance registration is required: 541-488-6606.

Over in Jacksonville, where a 150th anniversary celebration is under way all week, Southern Oregon University archaeologist Chelsea Rose speaks at 5:30 p.m. about the State of Jefferson, that mythical chunk of land encompassing Northern California and Southern Oregon.

The two-hour talk is at the Quady North tasting room at 255 California St., and the $10 fare includes a glass of wine and appetizers. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Southern Oregon Historical Society. Details: 541-702-2123 or zoe@quadynorth.com.
