Schmidt Family Vineyards lands awards
An Applegate winery claimed seven medals at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
Schmidt Family Vineyards announced its status today as the most medal-winning winery in Southern Oregon and the region's only winery to take home more than one gold medal. Wines made with Southern Oregon fruit or by area wineries won 58 medals at the competition, judged Jan. 7. Known as the "largest competition of American wines in the world," the event had 5,050 entries from 23 states.
Schmidt Family Vineyards won gold for its 2008 Syrah ($34) and Cabernet Sauvignon ($38), silver for its 2008 Merlot ($32), Malbec ($30), Soulea blend ($34) and Tempranillo ($32) and bronze for its 2008 Zinfandel ($32).
Owned and managed by Cal and Judy Schmidt, the vineyards were planted in merlot, syrah and cabernet sauvignon grapes in 2001. The Schmidts have steadily increased their wine production to 3,000 cases annually. The tasting room at 330 Kubli Drive, Grants Pass, is surrounded by several acres of herb and flower gardens with a large pond; it is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. Call 541-846-9985.
