Man dies in house fire

SHADY COVE — A man was found dead Wednesday afternoon after apparently being trapped inside a bedroom fully involved in fire.

Firefighters were called to a house fire in the 300 block of Country Court at about 12:20 p.m. A woman had called 9-1-1, reporting her home was on fire and that her husband was still trapped inside in his bed. He was unable to leave the house on his own because he had limited mobility.

"The 9-1-1 told us he was not able to exit the building by himself," said Robert Miller, Fire District No. 4 chief.

Jackson County Fire District No. 4 led the efforts to extinguish the blaze with help from Jackson County Fire District No. 3. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department also responded to the fire, as there was a fatality involved.

Sheriff's officials confirmed the man's identity as Anthony McCullough, 38. McCullough's wife, Michelle, made the 9-1-1 call shortly after arriving home and seeing the fire.

Fire crews responded with five engines and 25 firefighters. They found McCullough dead in the home during their initial search, Fire District No. 3 spokesman Don Hickman said.

The bedroom was fully involved in flames by that time. Crews put it out in a matter of minutes and contained most of it to the bedroom. Some flames spread to the attic. A dog was found in the backyard unhurt and taken off the property.

The fire's cause still is under investigation.
