Arts grants awarded

The Jackson County Cultural Coalition, funded by the Oregon Cultural Trust, will give $17,000 in grants to 16 cultural organizations at its annual awards ceremony 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, in the large meeting room at the Medford library.

In addition to the awards ceremony, Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre will perform and students at Sams Valley Elementary will display artwork.

Awards will be given to the following groups.

Ashland Gallery Association will get $950 to help purchase art materials and supplies for Ashland High School students and for volunteer artists exhibiting in Ashland Gallery Association galleries.

Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre will get $1,125 to help create costumes and pay for leasing a costume storage and activity room at Central Medford High School.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Rogue Valley will get $1,150 for a program that will introduce 250 children to culture and art from all over the world, while teaching them the value of an active, healthy, well-balanced and positive lifestyle.

Dancing People Company will get $900 to place the entire dance company of six or seven artists in residence at Crater High School and a teaching artist in residence at Eagle Point High School for two weeks each.

Ford Institute Leadership Program-Phoenix/Talent Cohort 2 will get $1,170 to help pay for the creation of a mural in Talent and the building of a bandstand in Phoenix.

Jacksonville Heritage Society will get $900 to help with the cost of deferred maintenance of the St. Joseph's Catholic Rectory, including replacing the roof, re-glazing and re-puttying windows, rebuilding the porch, and restoring the interior.

Lake Creek Historical Society will get $850 to establish a website to make materials from the Lake Creek Historical Society's collection available online.

Rogue Community College will get $1,070 to help buy of music stands for the new music facility on the Riverside campus in Medford.

Rogue Opera will get $1,200 to help underwrite performances of Opera Tales! Pinocchio for elementary school students in rural, underserved areas of Jackson County.

Rogue Valley SMART Program will get $1,550 to buy Caldecott and Newberry Award winning books for children in 26 Title One schools in Jackson County.

Rogue Valley Symphony Association will get $1,200 to help increase the numbers of visits by the Chamber Players Quintet to Jackson County schools.

Sams Valley Elementary School will get $1,050 to help fund a fine arts program once every other week for students at Sams Valley Elementary.

Siskiyou Institute will get $900 to help bring national touring and regional musicians into schools to present workshops, mini performances and master classes.

Southern Oregon Historical Society will get $1,000 to help support an educational outreach program to collect and solve historical mysteries about people, places, and events in Jackson County.

St. Clair Productions will get $1,000 toward underwriting seven concerts, four workshops, and one school performance.

Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon will get $985 for scholarships for orchestra members.
