Don't need a big moving truck?
Living in a county where the population is aging and many people are downsizing, Gary Stamps saw a need that he hopes to capitalize on.
Stamps has launched a small-scale moving service for households that are relocating within Jackson County.
"Our niche is serving people who are moving in and out of one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and condos and retirement centers," said Stamps, who started Junior Mover Management last month.
Stamps, a real estate agent with Windermere Van Vleet & Associates Real Estate on East Jackson Street in Medford, has seen the growing need among the senior population and others, who need help moving furniture and other belongings, but not a large moving van.
"I've got a pretty good grasp of the community," said Stamps, who has been in real estate sales for the past 31 years, including 11 on his present watch. "This gives me a chance to wear a couple of hats — I'm not an idle guy."
To his way of thinking, there is a natural transition from real estate transactions to assisting people in moving to their next abode. Some operations will be simpler than others and some people will need goods taken to donation centers as they downsize.
There is, however, a learning curve, Stamps said, "when you are handling household goods and people's possessions."
The new company is licensed through the Oregon Department of Transportation for general freight deliveries throughout the county. Should business grow, Stamps has an eye on expanding to Josephine County.
The basic hourly charge for moves is $85 with a two-man crew, working a two-hour minimum. Stamps said his movers have experience working for major national moving companies such as Bekins and Mayflower.
The company's general freight permit allows it to pick up and deliver appliances such as washers and driers. That cost is $55 with a surcharge of $10 when a lift gate is used for items more than 100 pounds.
"I did an awful lot of research and this is one of the things you are seeing more of in large areas," Stamps said."
While the business is designed for moves from Monday through Saturday, Sunday and holiday service is available.
"That," he said, "Will involve a different rate structure."
