Restaurants to donate some of their proceeds to SMART

A dozen area restaurants will donate a portion of their proceeds from Tuesday, May 8, to the Start Making a Reader Today, or SMART, program. Funds will be used to help buy books for the program, which this year is matching volunteer mentors with more than 900 elementary school students.

Participating restaurants are Asian Grill, 1200 Biddle Road, Medford; Bambu, 970 N. Phoenix Road, Medford; Wild River Brewing & Pizza, 2684 N. Pacific Highway, Medford; Pangea, 272 E. Main St., Ashland; Original Bobbio's Pizza, 312 Oak St., Central Point; Figaro's Pizza, 11264 Highway 62, Eagle Point; Figaro's Pizza, 175 Second Ave., Gold Hill; Baci's Pizza, 510 E. Main St., Rogue River; The Grotto, 302 E. Main St., Talent; Wild River Brewing & Pizza, 595 N.E. E St., Grants Pass; Figaro's Pizza, 550 Redwood Highway, Grants Pass; and Wild River Brewing & Pizza, 249 N. Redwood Highway, Cave Junction.

Hiking expert William Sullivan will talk about his favorite hikes and some newly discovered ones in Central and Southern Oregon at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, in the former Headwaters building, 84 Fourth St., Ashland.

Sullivan has written seven books about Oregon's outdoors, as well as two books on Oregon history, two adventure memoirs and three novels. His journal, "Listening for Coyote," was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission as one of the 100 most significant books in the state's history.

There is no charge for the event, which is sponsored by Northwest Nature Shop in Ashland.
