The investigation into the murder of David Grubbs is set to be analyzed by the FBI on July 3, said Ashland police Chief Terry Holderness.

One of the bureau's Behavior Analysis Units, teams of investigative experts on violent crimes, will hear a formal presentation on the investigation and submit an independent report of its findings a few weeks later, Holderness said.

APD Deputy Chief Corey Falls and Detective Carrie Hull will give the presentation at an FBI training facility in Quantico, Va., Holderness said. Falls will be training at the facility at the time of the presentation, so his travel expenses will be paid by the FBI. APD will foot the travel bill for Hull, Holderness said.

Falls and Hull have been putting the presentation together for about a month. The department is transferring interviews, evidence and other components of its investigation to the bureau for analysis.

Behavior Analysis Units usually are busy with high-profile serial killings and normally don't take single-homicide cases, Holderness said.

According to the bureau's website, the units "provide operational support for complex and time-sensitive cases and other matters through the application of investigative case experience, education, specialized training and research."

"I don't know of any other Southern Oregon case that's even been presented to them," Holderness said. "Given the level of violence and totality of the (Grubbs) case, they agreed."

Ashland police have been working loosely with the FBI since the Nov. 19 murder of the 23-year-old on the Central Ashland Bike Path near Hunter Park.

Ashland police hope the FBI will reveal a potential profile for who might have killed Grubbs and "reveal if there's something else we should have done or could do," Holderness said.

"It's an intense round of questioning after the formal presentation," he said.

A reward amount of more than $21,000 is being offered for anyone who helps solve the brutal murder.

Grubbs, a musician, was killed after being hit in the head and neck with a sharp object multiple times while he was walking home from his job at Shop'n Kart.

The financial reward will be given for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Grubbs' murderer.
