Hansen paces State team in all-star loss

Ashland High graduate Billy Hansen scored a team-high 24 points, three steals and three assists to pace the State team in Game 2 of the 40th annual OACA State vs. Metro All-Star Series Saturday at Wilsonville High School.

The Metro all-stars swept the two-game basketball series that consists of Class 6A and 5A players, scoring a 112-77 win Friday in Eugene and a 105-87 win Saturday.

Hansen, who has committed to play both baseball and basketball for NCAA Division II Regis University in Denver, Colo., earned the Stars of Stars award for his performance Saturday, which included a 10-for-16 shooting clip and two 3-pointers.

Putting hits together in bunches paid off big for the Medford Mustangs on Tuesday night, with Medford using a pair of four-run frames to ease past the Fairfield Expos for a 9-4 baseball victory at Harry & David Field.

The Mustangs (8-5) used five straight hits in the third inning to score four runs and build a 5-1 cushion, then strung together four straight hits to set the table for another four-run frame in the fifth.

Cody Hoff helped pave the way by going 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases, while Ethan Schlecht was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, one run scored and two RBIs for Medford. Hayden Evans went 2-for-2 with one run, Taren Bradd was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs and Billy Hansen 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

Nate Namanny squeezed home the fourth run in the third inning and scored on a wild pitch strikeout in the fifth. Bradd's double kickstarted the scoring in the fifth, Evans also doubled in the inning and Hansen's double plated the fourth and final run for a 9-2 lead.

Isaiah Luzny picked up his first win for the Mustangs by allowing three runs two earned in seven innings. His only walk was to the first batter he faced and the left-hander finished with four strikeouts.

Medford returns to Harry & David for a nonconference game at 7 tonight against the Corvallis Marketmen, then opens American Legion AAA Area 4 play Thursday with a doubleheader at Klamath Falls.

Pilots sweep

Jack Carroll struck out nine in five strong innings to pick up the win in Game 1, and Steen Fredrickson drove in the game-winning run in the nightcap as Ashland swept Grants Pass in an American Legion A doubleheader Monday at North Mountain Park.

The Pilots beat the Diggers 11-1 in a first game that ended after five innings by the 10-run mercy rule, and 3-2 in the second game when Fredrickson's line drive to left scored Tommy Hulick from third with two outs in the seventh.

In the opener, Eric Carlson continued his torrid start to summer ball by going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. His two-run single in the third helped Ashland (4-1) pull away.

In the second game, Hulick went 3-for-3 with a run scored, Ryan Bottimore was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and James Whelan pitched five solid innings of relief to pick up the win.

Ashland travels to face North Medford (11-2, 11-1 Area 4) today. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at noon.
