Scavenger hunt begins soon
The 14th annual Middle School State of Jefferson Scavenger Hunt will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24
At that time, 41 questions in 5 categories will be released, and contestants from 10 area middle schools will have three days to research answers. Retired Rogue River math teacher Lenny Friedman concocted the questions.
An adjudication session will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the Southern Oregon University campus, where student teams will defend their answers and argue against competitors' answers in front of judges.
Event officials said all answers can be found in a middle school, branch library, a reference library and on the Internet. The teams are encouraged to use human resources such as teachers, parents and community members to offer support and provide tips and leads.
Steve Boyarsky, a retired SOESD superintendent, will moderate the event. Attorneys Melisa Button and Michael Mayerle of the law firm Hornecker, Cowling, Hassen & Heysell LLP will act as judges.
SOU Pre-College Youth Programs will sponsor the event. For more information, visit http://www.sou.edu/youth/competitions/scavenger_hs.html.
