33 governors ask IOC to rethink cut to wrestling
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad is hoping support from dozens of governors will help a campaign to keep wrestling in the Olympics.
Branstad sent a letter Tuesday co-signed by 33 governors to International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge. It urges that the committee reconsider its decision to remove wrestling in 2020.
Branstad says in the letter the Olympics should respect key traditions. Wrestling was featured in the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896. He also says the committee should be more transparent about how it votes when cutting sports from the program. The IOC's decision earlier this year to remove wrestling has drawn criticism. More than 23,000 people have signed an online petition supporting Branstad's campaign to save the sport, which is beloved in Iowa.
Von Miller guarantees Super Bowl title for Broncos
DENVER — It's only March and Von Miller is already guaranteeing a Super Bowl title for the Denver Broncos next season.
Miller says he's dedicating the season to his 6-year-old cousin who recently emerged from a coma after a car accident with his mother and older brother in West Texas.
On Monday, Miller tweeted: "You can post this where ever.. Denver broncos will win the Super Bowl" in the 2013 season. He added hash tags "4UJEREMIAH" and "IGUARANTEEIT58."
The linebacker later told The Associated Press that when the boy, Jeremiah Clark-Martinez, came out of his coma he remembered he had a cousin who played for the Broncos. That inspired Miller to make his pledge.
NEW YORK — Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne, the late Jerome Brown and LaDainian Tomlinson are on the final ballot for College Football Hall of Fame for the first time.
The National Football Foundation on Tuesday announced the 77 former players and five former coaches who will be considered for induction.
The ballot is distributed to the more than 12,000 NFF members and current Hall of Famers. The votes are tabulated and submitted to the 14-member NFF's honors court, which selects the class.
Dayne is the career rushing leader in major college football and won the Heisman for Wisconsin in 1999. Tomlinson won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's best running back in 2000 for TCU. Brown anchored the defensive line for the great Miami teams of the mid-1980s.
