Siskiyou Violins plan performances
The Siskiyou Violins, the Rogue Valley's award winning ensemble of young violinists, will perform in Medford and Ashland.
They will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Craterian Theater; and a nearly identical concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Southern Oregon University's Music Recital Hall.
The concerts are designed to help the young musicians prepare for a June performance at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as invitees to the 2014 Los Angeles International Music Festival.
Both local concerts will begin with the Siskiyou Violins Juniors, whose ages range from 7 to 10. The rest of the concert will consist of the advanced group of around 25 to 30 violinists — ages 8 to 18 — performing as an ensemble, and accompanied other instruments.
Oboist Gabe Young, first place winner of a statewide solo oboe competition for Oregon's high school students, will lead a performance of Mozart's Oboe Quartet at the Craterian concert.
Other high school students performing with the group include cellist Paul Shubat, winner of the annual Concerto Competition of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon, and soprano Lauren Green, who was in two musicals at the Camelot Theatre in Talent last year.
Classical guitarist Tye Austin, a recent SOU graduate who performed in Carnegie Hall last year as a winner of the American Protege International Piano and Strings Competition, also will perform with the ensemble.
Artistic Director of the Siskiyou Violins, Faina Podolnaya will lead the concerts and SOU senior Tatsiana Asheichyk is the accompanist.
Tickets for the Craterian concert are available at the Craterian Theater in Medford and Paddington Station in Ashland. Tickets for the SOU concert are available at Paddington Station. The general admission prices are $15 for adults and $5 for students.
