UPDATED: OSP investigates death of burglary suspect near Grants Pass (6:20 p.m.)

Updated 6:20 p.m. A man burglarizing a cabinet shop this morning just south of Grants Pass died after a scuffle with people arriving at the business to start the workday, Oregon State Police said.

The identity of the man was not immediately released, but he is a 33-year-old from Grants Pass, according to an OSP news release.

An employee of Innovative Woodworx LLC was being dropped off by his father when they saw signs of forced entry into the building at 2245 Harbeck Road, police said.

The two went inside to check and found an intruder. They confronted him and there was a brief physical scuffle before the father and son detained the suspected burglar and called 911, police said.

A few minutes later, dispatchers got a second call from the business advising the detained man had stopped breathing and they were going to start CPR, the news release said. About ten minutes later, after OSP and medical personnel arrived on scene, the man was pronounced deceased.

The cause of the man's death is unknown, OSP Sgt. Tyler Lee said.

An autopsy is being scheduled to help confirm the cause and manner of death. OSP detectives are continuing the investigation and working to notify next of kin, the news release said.

10:40 a.m. A suspected burglar died at a business south of Grants Pass this morning after employees found him inside, Oregon State Police investigators reported.

OSP Southern Command Center dispatch received a transferred 911 call shortly after 7 a.m. reporting an interrupted burglary in progress at a business at 2245 Harbeck Road, south of Grants Pass. Employees said they arrived at work and found a man in the building.

Before troopers arrived, employees reported the man stopped breathing, police said. Dispatchers sent emergency medical crews to the location.

Employees started cardiopulmonary resuscitation until police and medical personnel arrived, but the man, who hasn't been identified yet, was pronounced dead, police said.

OSP said more information will be sent out later today when additional details are authorized for release.
