OIT men's coach Miles picks up his 999th win
KLAMATH FALLS — Oregon Tech men's basketball coach Danny Miles recorded career victory 999, as his Hustlin' Owls defeated Eastern Oregon University by an 81-60 score on Friday in Cascade Conference basketball action at Danny Miles Court.
Oregon Tech improved to 12-10 overall and is now even in CCC play at 5-5. Eastern Oregon falls to 12-8 on the year and 3-7 in the CCC standings.
Miles, who is in his 43rd season at Oregon Tech, is now 999-407 overall in his career. Miles will become just the second coach in men's basketball history at a four-year school to reach the 1,000 win mark, following only Harry Statham of McKendree University. Statham, currently in his 48th season at MU, has 1,076 to date.
Trailing 13-10 to the Mountaineers, Tech's Mihajlo Matic connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and with 11:30 remaining in the opening period the Owls never trailed again. Oregon Tech would move up by 12 in the opening stanza on three occasions, the last on a pair of Austen Flint free throws to give the home team a 42-30 lead with 26 seconds on the clock.
Eastern Oregon's Trevor Phillips scored to end the half, giving the Owls a 10-point cushion at intermission.
An 8-3 run to open the second saw EOU close their deficit to just five points 45-40 with 15:52 to play.
Tech, however, answered with an 18-6 run to put the game away, leading 63-46 with 8:02 remaining. The Mountaineers would close the gap to 12 points, but that was as close as it got, as the Owls kept control and moved on for the 81-60 victory.
Tech's Brandon Bautista posted a team-high 13 points in the win, finishing it up with seven assists and three steals. Mihajlo Matic and Duncan Schramm scored 12 points each, followed by Kyle Waits with 11 points in just 17 minutes. Josh Johnson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with seven points in the win.
EOU's Tony Eackles tallied a game-high 23 points and four assists with Kyllian Wood contributing 17 points and eight rebounds in the loss for the Mountaineers. Trevor Phillips added 11 points.
For the game the Owls finished 25-of-49 from the field (51 percent), including a 12-for-22 effort from long range. Eastern Oregon, meanwhile, were held to 39.5-percent shooting on 17-for-43 overall and 5-for-21 from the 3-point line. Oregon Tech would hold a 28-24 edge on the boards.
Danny Miles and his Hustlin' Owls will look for career victory 1,000 when College of Idaho visits today with the tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
