School health center opens in Prospect

Community Health Center has opened its fourth school-based facility, at Prospect School.

The School-Based Health Center is at 280 Mill Creek Drive and features two exam rooms, a laboratory, office space and state-of-the-art amenities such as telemedicine and electronic health records.

The SBHC sees students of Prospect Charter School, younger children in the community and school staff. Its hours are 8 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays, and organizers plan to expand hours over the next few months. Students are encouraged to make appointments, but walk-ins are welcome.

Services include diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness, routine physical exams including sports physicals, health education and counseling, vision and blood pressure screenings, immunizations, behavioral health counseling and over-the-counter medications to treat minor complaints, when approved by a parent or guardian. Prescription medications will also be available at the SBHC, utilizing the services of the newly opened pharmacy at Community Health Center in Butte Falls.

CHC also operates school-based health centers at Eagle Point High School, Ashland High School and Butte Falls Charter School, as well as medical clinics in Ashland, Medford, White City and Butte Falls.

With the electronic health records system implemented at CHC sites, patients can visit any clinic and providers will have access to all past information.

Prospect School Board approved a long-term lease of a building on the school campus for the clinic at no direct cost to Community Health Center, according to a release. A federal grant made possible through the Affordable Care Act paid for the majority of the building renovation, and four foundations approved grants to support staffing for the clinic: Cow Creek Umpqua Indian Foundation, The Oregon Community Foundation, PacificSource Foundation and the Gordon Elwood Foundation.

All major insurance carriers are accepted, and no student is denied care based on inability to pay. To reach Prospect School-Based Health Center, call 541-560-1180.
