Dr. C.J. Smith, formerly of Pendleton, now of Portland, spent a few hours in Medford Monday visiting friends and talking over the political situation. He is a candidate for the Democratic nomination as governor, and because he is favored by Governor West, has been dubbed the "residuary legate" by the Portland Oregonian. Dr. Smith served two terms in the state Senate as senator from Umatilla county and made and enviable reputation. He was a staunch supporter of the Crater Lake road bill and the Ashland Normal School.
"I seek the Democratic nomination for governor," said Dr. Smith "upon a platform of law enforcement and economy. I believe the law should be enforced and think Governor West has done right in enforcing it. I believe the time has come to call a halt in legislative extravagance. There are too many boards and commissions; too many officers drawing salaries. I stand pledged to give all parts of the state a square deal and will see that Southern Oregon gets its share."
