Medford police warn of likely scam from Medford man soliciting money
A man investigators suspect of repeatedly raising money under false pretenses is likely at it again, Medford police say.
Medford police warn that Ryan Brashears, 20, is going door to door, soliciting money for an amateur boxing event he claims will be in Eugene Feb. 20. He presents a hand-drawn flier that says "Amatuer (sic) State Boxing Finals!!!" and has a list of sponsors, amounts pledged and phone numbers.
"Brashears is quite familiar to law enforcement as he has posed as a U.S. Marine Veteran and also an SOU wrestler to solicit money door to door in the past," Medford police said on the department's Facebook page.
Police said he isn't a Marine nor a Southern Oregon University student or wrestler. He was arrested on a charge of criminal impersonation a year ago for posing as a Marine to solicit money, police said. Jackson County Circuit Court records show he failed to appear in court to face the charge.
Police advise against giving money to Brashears, as they believe his latest effort is just another scam.
