Mail Tribune gets top honor from GateHouse Media
The Mail Tribune has been named Newspaper of the Year in its division by GateHouse Media, one of four newspapers recognized with the top award given out by the parent company.
The Mail Tribune sports staff was also recognized with a first place in the sports section category, and News Editor Rob Galvin earned a first place in page design. Reporter Damian Mann took second place in news writing, and Photo Editor Bob Pennell received third place recognition in photography.
The awards were part of the 2013 Best of GateHouse competition for newsrooms. GateHouse operates about 400 newspapers across the country, along with approximately 350 websites. The Mail Tribune became part of the GateHouse group in September 2013.
The Mail Tribune competed in Division B, for newspapers with circulations of 9,000 to 24,999. Other Newspaper of the Year winners were Division A, the Peoria Journal Star in Peoria, Ill.; Division C, the Daily Messenger, Canandaigua, N.Y.; and Division D, the Wareham Courier, Wareham, Mass.
The contest judging was conducted by journalists from newspapers and related organizations, including The Newseum, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and the Seattle Times.
