Junior Steelheads down Spartans

BOISE, Idaho — Mackenzie Wood got the Southern Oregon Spartans off to a hot with two first-period goals in a battle of Western States Hockey League powers, but the lead didn’t last at the McCall Ice Center on Friday.

The host Junior Steelheads netted five straight goals in the third period to run away with a 6-3 victory.

Wood’s goals sandwiched a score by the Junior Steelheads’ Ondrej Valo in the first period. After a scoreless second period, Valo tallied to knot the score at 2-all and begin the five-goal streak.

Hunter Lester scored two goals in the third for the Junior Steelheads (8-0).

With 21 seconds remaining, Brody Surette added a garbage-time goal for the Spartans (11-2).
